The first vehicle rolled off the production line at Kia’s $1 billion all new production facility in Georgia today. The first vehicle in what could be as many as 300,000 vehicles a year was a Kia Sorento.
Expect to see more Asian manufacturers adding production capacity … or moving production capacity … to the United States in the next year or so as the US dollar continues to struggle against other currencies. Honda is one that has found that it could be cheaper to produce cars for various markets in the US than at home in Japan.
And expect to see those plants going up in the southern states for that’s where labour is cheaper than in the traditional automotive manufacturing states where the UAW has a grip on the labour market.
